Sigemund and Fitela had a plan. In the dead of night, approaching from the south, Sigemund swam slowly, pausing every now and then to lie on his back and squirt water like a whale.

Meanwhile Fitela circled to the north end of the rock and crept up onto the sand. His size was a help to him here because the dragon, who slept with one head always awake, didn't notice him because of his small size.
