Fairy Tale Unit: Composition Exam

Answer each of the following questions in a solid paragraph. Yes, that means at least five mature sentences. Restate the question as part of your answer and support your opinion by referring to specific fairy tales.

1. Apply Bettelheim’s list of plot elements to “Fearnot.” Discuss any of the ten elements listed if they apply to the story we watched. If you use exact words from the handout (and you should), be sure to enclose them in quotation marks.

2. Tolkien describes four facets he believes necessary in a good fairy tale. Select a fairy tale which includes all four elements. In your paragraph, support your choice by referring to specific events in the tale.

OR

Alternatively, select a tale you believe to be a very good fairy tale, in spite of its failure to include those four facets. Defend your choice by referring to the four elements and to specifics from your chosen tale.

3. Discuss three of the poems from your unit handout. Include title and author of each in your discussion. Judge each poem for yourself -- good, bad, silly, sensual, whatever criteria seem relevant -- but explain your opinion and support those opinions by referring specifically to each poem.
