The versions approved for class use were the translations by Burton Raffel (available from the book room) or Seamus Heaney (must be purchased on own). Choose one of the following outside reading assignments. |

A. Read a different translation of the Beowulf story and compare and contrast the two. Pay special attention to word choice, language, and other stylistic differences. |

B. Read one of the different versions of the Beowulf story and write an essay analyzing the ways in which the original has been adapted. Pay special attention to the intended audience. |

C. Watch one of the movie versions of the Beowulf story and compare and contrast it to the original. Pay special attention to how the traformation into film affects the original story. |
We may watch one of these so check with your
teacher first. |
